FROM RUNWAY TO ROOM TO TABLETOP

While looking for design inspiration I often go back to my roots, interior design. A lot of trends in the event planning field evolve from trends found within the interior design and fashion industry. I am one who loves color, textiles and fashion! The best part of my job is when I can infuse elements from interiors and fashion into my special events.

While searching for fresh new blogs to follow I came across 2 different blogs written by 2 very talented and lovey ladies Erin from elements of style and For the love of design by Kelly Moore. I loved their segment from runway to room and from runway to tabletop so much that I've decided they were too good not share and have decided to mesh the two together so that you can see the original inspiration translated into 2 different mediums. Who knows maybe it will inspire you too :)

1. How to look like Royalty!

One of the most discussed parts of any royal wedding is what exactly everyone will be wearing on their heads. Bridal Hats are the newest craze. The Bridal hats featured today were from Atlas Bridal. They provide a vgreat selection of headpieces to choose from. In spirit of the "Royal Wedding" we opted to feature a few Fascinators one that incorporated Flowers, Feathers and tulle. Depending on your personal style you can choose anything from a less is more approach with a simple feather and cageveil like what was shown on the segment or really make a statement with a large hat.

Hats aren’t just for the brides, guests can wear them too. The vintage piece that Kelly Heibreder was wearing was a fabulous vintage piece that we picked up from the Maumee Antique Mall

2. How to Feel like Royalty

A great way to really feel like a princess on your big day is to appointment a Lady in Waiting, which is a female personal assistant at a noble court, attending to a queen, a princess or other noblewoman. Because you want your closest friends and family to be relaxed and enjoy the days events we recommend hiring a wedding coordinator.

At Elite Events as part of our Day of Coordination Service we provide you with a “Lady in Waiting” Where one of us will stand by you as you get ready for your “big day”
We always come armed with our emergency kit, which can include anything from breath mints, to a sewing kit, a steamer down to dress socks. As well as tons of invaluable experience in the wedding industry.

3. Lastly and most importantly you want to treat your guests like royalty

What we created is a youthful take on what a royal wedding or event could look like.

We opted for a sapphire blue and gold color scheme pulling inspiration from the blue in kates ring and the gold that is used predominantly thought out buckham palace.

Utilizing elegant linens and chair covers is a great way to set the tone for any event. The gorgeous linens and chair cover we displayed were provided to us by our friends at Wildflowerlinens.
Bring in Fresh Flowers and create a STATEMENT centerpiece. The beautiful arrangement shown on todays news segment was created by our friends at Bartz Viviano. Ann does such an amazing job! What I loved about this particular piece is that it added just a bit of drama to our table scape still while appearing very ROYAL!
DETAILS, DETAILS DETAILS!
No matter how large or small of a gathering you have, it is the little details that help unify and differentiate your event.

For this particular occasion I custom designed Menu cards that coordinated with the "Royal Invitation" they can be placed at each place setting allowing each guest to know exactly what is going to be on the menu.
Keep in Mind the menu should look just as good as that 7 course meal will taste
How you display your napkin is another way you can be creative! We opted to use a fun napkin ring that was custom designed exclusively for Wildflower Linens to look exactly like Kate's engagement ring. How fun are they!!!! ( I wonder if her's is as big as the napkin ring? They did say it is a 18k Sapphire!
The final details to a regal place setting are your chargers and fine china. What I love about the ones shown below is that they work beautifully with the gold accents that we have thought-out our setting. This particular china was rented from Meredith Party Rentals.

After the news segment we headed downtown to The Toledo Club were we set our Royal Table for a Photoshoot with the fabulous Mary Wyar. The Toledo Club was the PERFECT setting for this ROYAL Table Scape, and Mary captured it's beauty wonderfully! These Photos are breathtaking!

Classy County Venue

This past Sunday we had the pleasure of Accompanying Katie and David one of our fabulous couples on a site tour of their venue County Line Orchard. County Line is located in Hobart Indiana roughly 45 minutes outside of Chicago. This picturesque setting is the perfect backdrop for Katie and David's Classy Country wedding. I took a few pictures during our visit, I hope you enjoy!

Bridal Showers: 10 Bridal Shower Ideas WE LOVE!

1. Send funky bridal shower invites

Skip the Evite for something with more panache. We love these ultra-modern pictogram

2. Make your own perfume bar

You read right -- set up a bar of oils and pretty perfume bottles so guests can craft their own signature scent! You can actually buy DIY perfume bar kits with customizable scent options and full instructions online

3. Set up a frozen yogurt buffet

Forget cupcakes. Rent a frozen yogurt machine and set out a buffet of fixings, from candies to cereal to fresh chopped fruit, for a shower dessert that’s delicious to eat and fun to create.

4. Create a colorful juice stand

Mimosas are tasty, but a whole bar of cocktails is a treat for the eyes and the taste buds. Set up a bevy of colorful beverages in vintage glass decanters. Stock them with fresh fruit and create small hanging signs to label each flavor.

5. Give out themed totes

Give your girls a gift they’ll actually use! Canvas totes are stylish and practical -- stuff them with extras that fit the party theme (think: bottles of wine, flower seed packets, or beach towels). You can even have them monogrammed in The Knot Shop.

McCall & Ben

Back in January I had the sincere pleasure of attending one of my closest friends wedding in Charleston, SC. McCall and I met back in 2006 when we both moved to California. McCall actually attended The Southern California Institute of Architecture with my husband. We decided to catch a movie one night together downtown, and the rest is history! We have been very close friends ever sense. McCall is the sweetest and most loving person I know. She is a incredible friend and I am so lucky to have her in my life. I cannot tell you how much joy it brings me to see her so happy. McCall and Bens wedding took place on Sullivan's Island at the Church of the Holy Cross. It was a beautiful intimate ceremony and reception.

Below are some detail photos that I was able to take. This was a first time ever visiting SC, and needless to say it was just as beautiful as McCall described.

We had the sincere pleasure of designing a tablesscape for Beautiful Blooms by Jen's first ever open house! When deciding on a color scheme for this tablescape we wanted to select something that would both complement the room that it was going to be in, as well as reflect the personal style of Jen Cummins the owner of Beautiful Blooms by Jen. Considering that we have been hired to provide concept design for Jens own wedding we arrived at a color scheme very quickly, navy and pink, the colors that Jen has selected for her very own wedding. These colors are beautiful, elegant, modern and chic and look absolutely fabulous together.

It’s that time of year again—wedding season is around the corner and Elite Events is accepting applications for interns (Event Assistants) to assist us during our 2011 wedding season.

What You’ll Do :: Event Assistants will assist with all day-of wedding tasks including: setting up decor at ceremony and reception sites, assisting vendors with deliveries (ie. cake, flowers, linens, rentals), assisting with ceremony management, assisting vendors as needed throughout the day, ensuring time lines are being followed, trouble shooting problems that arise, communicating with vendors & bridal parties, ensuring accuracy of layouts, and much more. Event Assistants are always working alongside an experienced Event Planner or Coordinator who is there to direct & teach you!

Who We’re Looking For :: We are seeking junior & senior level students pursuing a degree in a related field (public relations, communications, hospitality & tourism, design, etc.), who are excited about learning the ins-and-outs of event planning, work well with a team, and exhibit a high level of responsibility. Weddings can be a stressful and emotionally charged time for a bride & groom and their families—the ideal candidate is friendly, enthusiastic, self motivating, calm under pressure, and a great communicator! Most of our events are located in the Toledo area, however some of our events have us traveling out of state and will require overnight stays. You must be able to travel to Toledo and destination weddings for events on weekends. For events out of state and over 90 miles in distance, overnight accommodations will be paid for.

What You’ll Get :: This is an unpaid internship and must apply towards college credit. You will walk away from this internship with hands-on experience in event planning & execution unlike anything you can learn in a classroom. This internship puts you in the action, working with real clients, professional vendors and beautiful locations throughout Northwest Ohio.

When You’ll Work :: Weddings are scheduled primarily on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Interns will be scheduled to work for a 16-18 week period (approximately June 1-Oct 30) and will assist with 8-10 events. We are happy to take schedules into consideration if given proper notice at start of season. Interns will also be assigned “pre-event” tasks each week, which can often be completed online from home.

At Elite Events everything we do stems from asking OUR 3 C's of Event Design

How can we make this creative?

With these in mind here are a few different way on how you can use OUR 3 C's to put a creative twist on classic wedding traditions.

1) Wedding Wands

Are a creative way to congratulate the Bride and Groom at the end of any wedding ceremony and a great substitute for boring birdseed, bubbles, bells & flower petals.

o They can be a cost effective DIY project, or if you are short on time ordering them is still affordable since you only need one for every other guest attending.

o Wedding Wands also keep your event cohesive since the ribbons can be made in your wedding colors, they make for great photos as well.

What you will need to Create your own wedding wand:

Doll Rods (can be purchased from local craft store)Keep in mind you only need 1 for every other guest attending
3-4 different colors of ribbon (quantity will vary depending on the size of ribbon you select) keep in mind for the base of the wand a wider ribbon tends to cover better.
Glue Gun and Glue sticks
Thumb tacks
Rhinestones (for embellishment)

The steps to creating your wands are pretty simple

Loosely wrap your desired color ribbon around the doll rod to get a rough idea of how much ribbon you will need to cover the handle of the wand.
Once you have the desired length cut the ribbon from the roll
Place a dab of hot glue at the base of the handle to secure the ribbon.
Run a line of hot glue up the handle as you wrap the handle with ribbon. (keep the ribbon tight, as you do not want the ribbon to be loose around the handle)
As you get to the top of the handle secure the end with a final dab of glue.
For the streamer: Measure and cut your ribbon to the desired streamer length.
Stack the ribbon streamers and attach with either a dab of glue or thumb tack to the end of the doll rod.
When finished embellish the thumb tack with a beautiful rhinestone.

Our wands are wrapped with 3-4 strands of ribbon that hang from it. There is also a rhinestone at the top of the wand where the ribbon strands are attached.

When placing the order for the wands you must choose 2 ribbon colors. If you send us swatches of your wedding colors we will try our best to match them as closely as possible.

2) Candy Buffet Upgrade / The S’more Station

o Guests used to be wowed by the Candy Buffet as seen in this picture here

o However, with its growing popularity it's lost its luster and is in need of an major upgrade, so we are introducing new interactive sweet stations custom designed for you and your guests.

o Here you can see is one of my favorites: The S’ mores station, offering unique recipes like: Strawberry Cheesecake, PB&J, we even have a vegan S’more. It is fun, creative and great for any event.

3) Guest Book Alternative, The Finger Print Tree *download available via out website www.eliteeventstoledo.com

This is a great alternative to the traditional guest book which usually ends up sitting in a drawer or lost on a shelf. The fingerprint tree is interactive, personal and a beautiful keepsake, that is more original than the guest book plates and framed pictures we’ve all seen.
How it works: Your guests are asked to leave their fingerprint as a leaf on your tree, if you want you can have them sign their name below for an added personal touch. When it is finished you have a fun piece of art that has a very special meaning!

How to incorporate the 3'c into your decor and wedding fashion.

4) Reusing Ceremony decor in the Reception

When it’s done right Ceremony decor can be an effective way to make sure every part of the event is cohesive. The key to being cost effective is versatility. Flower Poms or Pomanders are a beautiful ceremony decor and can easily be transitioned into the reception.
If your having an indoor ceremony you can hang the flower poms from a pew or chair. If outdoors you can use a Shepard’s hook or place the poms directly on the grass.
During cocktail hour move the poms into your reception and you have:

1. A statement centerpiece

2. Creative table number display

3. Or hang them over your cake table to create a fun chandelier.

5) Tux’s vs Suits

o No one wants to rent a tuxedo and look like they did at prom, but finding afforable red carpet worthy suits are hard to come by, so our friends at Ticknors inside Westfield Franklin Park have developed a wonderful program.

o For $199 (basically the same price as a tuxedo rental) your Tickoners expert will custom design & tailor suits for your entire wedding party in the right colors, textures & sizing. Series III: Wedding Etiquette For Every Type of Wedding Guest By: Elite Events Planner, Kati Kerekes

At every wedding there are “Bad Guests”. These people have to be tracked down by the parents of the bride for their RSVP's, they ask to bring a date or children even though they were not invited. Some of them choose to not purchase items off the gift registry because they want to be different. Others RSVP for one type of food then request a different one at the meal. Then there are the ladies who decide to wear white or not wear enough clothes at all and the gentleman who show up to a black tie event in khakis and a polo. Whether you are the person who had a little too much to drink or included your new date in the family group photo session at some point every one of us has made a mistake as a guest.
Want to change your ways? From start to finish here are some tips on how to be the best guest!
Once you receive a Save The Date, check your calendar and immediately let the couple know if you can’t make it. They probably have an A, B and C list and will be able to invite others in your place. On the same note, if you know you can make it, let them know you received the information and are excited to attend. When the formal invitation comes, reply promptly & do not add more guests to the response than have been invited. If it is not clear if you can bring a date or your children, it is OK to ask. Remember understanding who is invited and asking to invite more people are two different things and the latter of the two will make the couple uncomfortable. Want to be a super nice guest? RSVP online. This saves tons of time for the couple!
If you are traveling from out of town, book your travel arrangements ASAP. Hotels will book up & you might miss out on the group discounted rate. If information has not been provided on transportation, it is safe to assume you are to make arrangements on your own.
Unless you and the entire wedding party are surprising them with a brand new car, buy off the registry or just give money. Period. The couple took the time to figure out what they wanted so don't be rude and snub their suggestions. If you can’t find anything you would like to give, then a lovely card with money is always safe and super easy to put in your clutch purse!
Know your venue & dress appropriately. If you are not sure what to wear save humiliation and ask someone else attending. You do not want to wear heels in the grass, forget your suit jacket or upstage the bride.
Treat the ceremony the same way you would treat a movie or live theater. Arrive at least 15 minutes early, turn your cell phone off & use the restroom before it starts. Some ceremonies may run long, a little bottle of water may keep you from passing out during a hot August afternoon. If you have a child who might get fussy sit closest to the door so you can quickly and quietly escape before their screams block out the couples’ vows. If you are late don’t try walking down the isle, simply stand in the back or slip in from the side.
During cocktail hour enjoy the snacks, but do not hover over the smoked salmon and devour all the mini crab cakes. If you absolutely need seconds and thirds do it at the cheese and cracker station where left overs are common. Remember you are not the only guest at the party. When you see the Bride and Groom congratulate them, take a photo, then let them visit with other guests. It is not the time to bring up your sister’s dead cat.
During the reception, remember the 3 D's: Dance often, Drink water & have a Designated Driver!

Some of you may dread this, while others anticipate the party. No matter which type of guest you are, and whether its your 1st wedding or your 15th, chances are wedding etiquette isn't your fort-ay. In-fact, until your the one getting married most do not realize the wedding fauex pa's their committing.

As a wedding planner & Bride to be the error in my wedding guest past is haunting me like an ugly bridesmaids dress. In an attempt to change my etiquette karma I have created a series of wedding guidelines for everyone from the mother of the bride to the blind date sitting at table 7.

Series II Bridal Party Do's & Dont's

Its an honor to be asked to be a member of the Bride & Grooms inner circle. Besides making some great memories along the way, your commitment can also become expensive, time consuming & sometimes stressful. Here are some guidelines for the future bridesmaids & groomsmen of the world that will keep the Bride & Groom happy & yourself sane.

Know What You Are Signing Up For:

Remember, every wedding is different, each family has there own set of traditions, ideas, & budget. You could be agreeing to take part in something you can not afford or have the time to commit to. Since weddings are an emotionally driven event communication is the key to not ruining your relationship with the couple during the process.

Ask what will be expected of you, how much things will cost & what role you will be playing through out the entire process. Let them know how happy and excited you are and be clear on what you feel comfortable spending. The Bride & Groom will respect you for asking the important questions and may be willing to make some compromises should you not be able to afford or attend every wedding event. Should you find yourself declining the invitation be aware that it may cause some hurt at first but it will be much better then not meeting expectations and feeling stressed down the road.

Be Supportive, Not Opinionated and if You Must, LIE

Imagine the cheerleaders at your high school wearing itchy ugly uniforms, standing in the rain, jumping, screaming, kicking, while holding the biggest smiles for a team that might not even win. Embrace the notion that a bridal party member is like a cheerleader, you must believe in your couple and love them enough to not care what you are wearing or what the weathers like, you must focus on the big day and how your support will make it a success. The Bride and Groom will drive you crazy at times, over whelm you with questions and ideas about their big day, and ask you for your thoughts on everything from dress, decor, to party location and color scheme. No matter how strange or disagreeable you find it, even constructive criticism should always be positive.

Party Etiquette :

Bridesmaids: Find out if there will be an engagement party, shower, bachelorette party and who will be hosting them. Sometimes these responsibilities will fall on you. Be up front on what you can contribute and open to suggestions from the family. Share your contact information with everyone in the wedding party and be prepared to spend some time and money on all of these things.
Groomsmen: Be helpful with party planning needs, find out who the maid of honor is and return her emails & phone calls. She might be cute, but now is not the time to try to hit on her or any of the bridesmaids for that matter. Remember, the reception will have the ladies looking their best and most likely wanting to slow dance, so try to stay cute and mysterious until then.

Everyone: Talk to your Bride/Groom about what they want for their bachelor/bachelorette party and pre-wedding events. Do not do anything they are not comfortable with and no matter how black out drunk they get, do not allow them to do something they will regret. The day of the wedding remember they may get cold feet and although you swore to never get married it is your job to make sure they do. Stay sober enough to give a toast that will roast the groom, flatter the bride and make everyone laugh and cry, then go find that bridesmaid or groomsmen you have been eying and celebrate the evening!

Part 1: Parents, Family & Close Friends

This is a special day for you, but it's NOT your special day. Whether you are footing the bills, helping with plans or just there for support here are some tips to make sure the process is smooth & the event is as special as everyone wants it to be.

How to share the Big News & Wedding Details with Friends & Family:
I know you are excited that your loved one is getting married, but that doesn't mean you should tell everyone about the engagement. Make sure you have a conversation with the couple on what information is OK to be divulged and to whom. The couple may want to tell certain people face to face. Do not steal their thunder by announcing on facebook before they had a chance to tell the other side of the family!
Even though its hard, try to keep the plans hush hush until the guest list has been hammered out between everyone involved. Some people may automatically assume that your conversation about “what the dress looks like, or where the event will be” means they are invited.

As the plans are finalized be careful not to tell guests too many details about the event. The couple has worked hard to create a unique experience for guests, so do not give the fun away or allow for your ideas to be stolen. Also by divulging information you open yourself up to the opinions of others, which might spoil the excitement if its not received well.

How to be Helpful and Not Harmful:
If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. This is not the time or the place to voice your anger towards other guests at the wedding. Chances are everyone already knows how you feel anyways. Instead politely request that you be seated on the other side of the room from those you can not be around. If you have to vent about anything or anyone related to the wedding do it far far far away from the couple and anyone else you want to enjoy the celebration. Remember letting the negatives bother you only keeps you and those around you from enjoying the positives.

Take a Step Back: If the Bride or Groom is stressed your first instincts might be to help, but what if you are the one causing the stress? Over the years I have witnessed countless Momzilla's & wedding party members giving their opinions and taking charge, oblivious to the fact that the Bride and Groom are ready to strangle them. Caught up in the moment you may make decisions based on what you think or what you would want. Before you jump the gun and do something that could cause harm, stop and think “How would they like this to be done, and what can I do to make things better for them?” Then ask! If they are smart enough to choose a partner in life they are smart enough to know how your help is needed most.

Do Not Get In Over Your Head: If you know that you do not have the time to hand write every address on envelopes do not agree to it. No matter how badly you want to make the couple happy, it will only end in disaster. Instead, come up with helpful solutions like hiring a calligrapher or printing labels. You may have to be the bad guy at first, but at least it wont blow up in your face later.

If you do decide to help with a project, RESPECT DEADLINES! Guests are going to be late responding to everything, they probably wont purchase gifts off the registry and a few will even try to bring guests that are not invited to the event. Do not be one of those annoying guests. If the couple asks something of you and you give your word, do it in a timely fashion and with respect to the guidelines you were given. If they have to ask you several times if something was taken care of, they might as well have done it themselves. You would never act like that to your co-workers or your boss so just because it's them doesn't make it OK.

How to Enjoy the Event: Having to set up a wedding and tear it down is exhausting. Keeping track of all the vendors while trying not to miss a second of the special moments is impossible. Consider hiring a wedding coordinator or find out if your location offers one. By removing the work from the wedding day you can relax and stay positive, which is how the couple will want you to be.

Dance Even If You Hate It: Guests will follow your lead and you can sit once the floor is packed!

Be the Last Guests to Leave: Make sure the bills were paid, the gifts are all packed up and the guests got home alright. It also allows you to savor the last moments of the day. I envision Steve Martin in Father of the Bride sitting alone with the last champagne, confetti in his hair, reflecting on the day and everything that made it happen, and if my memory suites me, after he recalls all the meltdowns and chaos he remembers how beautiful his wife looked and how happy his daughter was, and at the end he sheds a few tears then smiles proudly.

1. Sophisticated Elegance Returns
It's back to basics with elegant, sophisticated style in 2011. Wedding decor will be simple and understated, with modern design elements trumping DIY touches. Scripted calligraphy, custom monograms, and classic wedding cakes embody this trend. Brides will wear pearls, and grooms will ditch the Converse in favor of more tasteful wedding day kicks.

2. Outdoor Venues- Where It’s At
Couples tying the knot in 2011 will gravitate toward outdoor ceremony and reception venues. The raw, minimal backdrop of an outdoor setting leaves room for personalization and customization, a major perk for creative, hands-on nearlyweds. Lakeside venues, vineyard locations and spaces situated alongside sprawling mountains will dominate, and they’ll be spruced up with personalized touches that represent the bride and groom. 3. Grey is the New Black, Crazy for Navy
Gloomy no more, grey is the neutral IT color for 2011 weddings. And while grey remains the talk of the town for 2011, navy blue (and other deep blues) are definitely on-trend for the coming year. 4. Mad for Metallics & Bold Color Palettes
Whether it’s two bright hues with a metallic accent, or several metallic shades used together, brights and metallics will be popular choices for wedding color palettes in 2011. Gilded gold, shimmery silver, and sparkling champagne will used alone or with accents of yellow, purple or teal. And since metallics make such a bold statement on their own, couples will scale back over-the-top decor in favor of a more restrained style aesthetic.

5. Big Ball Gowns are Back
Dramatic ball gown wedding dresses floated down 2011 bridal catwalks in droves. Wedding dress designers draped, ruched, and layered clouds of tulle, power netting, and chiffon to fashion wedding dresses with limitless volume. The outcome? Fairytale-inspired bridal style and whimsical wedding dresses for 2011 I Dos.

6. Grooms Take a Walk on the Stylish Side

Wedding dresses will feature 3D applique, layered light fabrics (tulle, lace, chiffon), romantic ruffles, oversized florals, and illusion fabric with eye-catching beading. Textured linens will be layered to dress up reception tables, chair covers may be embroidered or beaded, and branchy centerpieces and floral arrangements will captivate wedding guests.

9. Ethnic Influences, Cultural Wedding Details
At long last, brides and grooms are embracing and showcasing their unique cultural traditions and ethnicity. The In's and Out's of Place Settings

With all of the celebrating that has been going on, I thought this was an appropriate topic to post about. I hope you will find this information useful in any event that you may be setting a table for: Dinner party, Engagement party, Christmas party, new years party, dinner with friends, wedding, whatever you feel like celebrating! Of course most of us will never set the table at our receptions, but it’s important to know the difference between the formal and informal place settings for event. Your table setting should continue to reflect your theme and formality to ensure a consistent and beautiful event.

Now this is a fairly basic way to set a table. Depending on what part of the world you are in it can vary. Place settings are a great way to personalize your tablescape, even when following the “rules.”

A informal meal offers a chance to relax and have a little fun, so all you’ll need is the basics. Take the opportunity to show a bit of personality by mixing and matching textures, patterns, and colors. This table features a patterned salad plate on top of a contrasting dinner plate. A charger isn’t required for such a casual setting.
The flatware aligns more or less with the bottom of the dinner plate.
No matter the occasion, make sure the knife’s blade points toward the plate. “It’s impolite to allow blades to face other diners,” says Anna Post, great-great-granddaughter of etiquette expert Emily Post and the author of Emily Post’s Wedding Parties
Feel free to use tumblers in place of wineglasses. It’s OK for stemmed and stemless glasses to coexist.
Place salt-and-pepper shakers near the center of the table. If someone asks you to pass the salt, hand her the pepper, too. The pair should always travel together.

A formal setting isn’t meant to be overcomplicated or just plain pretty, The order of everything on the table is logical.
A charger, or presentation plate , holds a spot for the dinner plate and should be removed after the salad course. In all but the most formal settings, you can forgo chargers, but etiquette sticklers swear by them, insisting guests should never walk up to a bare table.
All flatware should be evenly spaced, about a half inch apart.
People typically reach for water more often than wine, so the water goblet goes above the knife tip, with wineglasses (red above white) to the right.
If space allows, place the napkin to the far left, so as not to disturb the flatware.

Those are the basics, but as I mentioned before, you can get creative in the styling and presentations of each item! Cloth napkins are a must for a few reasons.

1. They look so much more elegant than paper,

2. they are environmentally friendly, and of course

3. they can be folded in many ways to dress up the appearance of the table.

If you have simple plates, one way to jazz it up is with colorful napkins and napkin rings. You could use vintage jewelry to make your napkins look simply elegant. I just love these images I found at Leslie Arna‘s blog site.

Ribbons, twine, broaches, bracelets, flowers and feathers make great napkin holders, you just need to be resourceful and scavenge for the perfect item!

Place mats, chargers, and table runners can also add some drama to your table scape. A pretty table runner as shown above can serve as both decoration and place mats.

For a little French-bistro flair, turn a colorful dish towel into a shared place mat.

Here are some less formal yet fairly fun place settings!

A whiteboard makes a clever charger/place card not to mention the perfet recepticle for dinnertime doodling :) love that the silverware is tied together with bells, what great detail.This would be great for a child's party!Even a casual setting can have a hint of drama, here supplied by geometric patterned salad plates

Don't be afraid to get playful with seating arrangements by using alphabet magnets to mark each guest’s spot.

DETAILS....

It is all about the details. A little goes a long way :) here are a some of our favorites :)

Place Cards: Refreshingly different place cards for summertime entertainment: personalized flags anchored in zesty limes.

Make place cards that are favors too, like this one using an inexpensive seed packet. Great for a luncheon with the girls in your garden!

Surprise guests with small treats that act as both placeholders and favors.

Why not utilize what is already available. A fork makes a great Place card holder!

Menus: Awning-striped “menus” add a bright, summery note.

Ideal for windy outdoor dining, printed rubber bands prettily secure napkins and silverware to plates.

Keep in mind Simple variations on a color are an easy way to pull together any table!

WE love getting deliveries! Yesterday was no exception, and we received lots of goodies!
Feast your eyes on this beautiful Bridal Hanger for our very own Kati Kerekes soon to be Kati McDougle!

Here is a sneak peak of her save the date magnet with Holiday Greeting. Let me just say how much I love the graphic we designed for her. If you all do not already know Kati and Bryan are huge Dave Mathews Band fans. Their graphic was inspired by Dave Mathews coffee rings graphic, which is used throughout a lot of his branding.
The back story of where the two "coffee circles" on the DMB came from: What happened is they are coffee stains that were on a napkin Dave was using during the recording process. Dave was having coffee with the cup on the napkin, and it left those 2 stains, and the story goes that when he picked it up the second time, and looked down he saw the rings and thought they were cool, and decided to make them their little BTCS symbol.

We infused their wedding colors into the design and spruced it up a notch to make it more fitting for their wedding.

The final greeting was printed on opaque vellum :)

Whats your wedding style?

I’m all about wedding styles, mostly because as a planner for an event design company, it helps me to know what types of things a bride is going to like. However, I’ve found that when I ask brides what their wedding’s style is, they really don’t know. “Classic” and “elegant” is what I hear a lot of. And it’s what I see a lot of too.

So how do you figure out what your wedding style is?

All of the answers are in how you live your life. Do you wear heels everywhere you go and have friends asking you to go shopping with them all the time? Maybe your style is chic defined as style and elegance.

Or maybe you and your fiance are the type of people who love being outside. You’re always biking, hiking, going the beach, playing sports, etc etc. You met a mutual friend’s barbeque or your first date was going surfing. It’s probably a no brainer to have an intimate backyard wedding, surrounded by your family and closest friends.

Are you a business woman? Stylish, modern, elegant, and poised are words that your friends would use to describe you. Your fiance is a go-getter and you met at Happy Hour at one of the most chic bars in the city. A clean, modern style is going to be perfect for you.

And of course we can’t forget the stylish, eclectic brides. Fun, spontaneous, and always looking ways to put a twist on things, you want a wedding that your guests most likely have never been to before. You and/or your fiance are most likely have some sort of artistic career, and you both have a flair for design. Oh, and no matter what he says, your fiance probably wants to have a say in how things are going to look for your wedding. And you’ll probably DIY some pretty awesome stuff.

Of course there are a TON more styles for weddings. I used the most popular styles for these, but of course there’s still the always popular garden wedding, and the occasional rustic celebration, among many more.) The best way to discover your wedding style is to look at everything about you and your fiance. From what you wear, to your jobs, to what you do for fun. You want your wedding to be a reflection of BOTH of YOU, not your venue, not your parents, and not what you *think* a wedding is *supposed* to be like. So before you make any solid decisions, figure out your wedding style!

I’m excited to officially announce an Elite Events promotion! Please say Hello to Kati Kerekes our Elite Events Event Coordinator and Office Manager! Most of our 2010 and 2011 clients already know Kati– she’s been working at Elite Events since January of 2009 as my right hand woman, assistant, and associate planner. She has assisted me on nearly all of our amazing weddings and events. To know Kati is to know that she loves three things: DMB, Fashion and Dancing! There's actually so many more things that she loves but when I think of her,those three things come to mind:) She is overly energetic, extremely passionate about what she does, incredible smart, talented, and helpful. Sometimes I wonder how we existed without her! I have learned so much from her this past year and she continues to inspire me– and everyone that surrounds her!

Kati is meeting with clients for 2011 and 2012 events, working both 2 month out Coordination and enhanced services. You’ll be hearing a lot more from her on here as she blogs about her own events, thoughts, and inspiration! In the meantime, you can leave her a little love here on the blog!

Runway Worthy Linens!

Who doesn't just LOVE gorgeous Linens! In my opinion linens are a must for any event, and no one does linen better than Wildflower Linen. They are one of my favorite suppliers for unique and stunning linens. And here is a big shocker for you they are originally based in LA! If you

have never heard of them before you will be in awe :) here’s a little more for you to digest, from their Open House Event in their new Phoenix Arizona showroom. I can’t wait til Song expands out here…I will be right on board!

Wildflower Linen celebrates yet another milestone with an Open House Event for our brand new showroom. But this time, it’s not fun in the sun in “cool” California, it’s fun in the sun in “hot” Arizona! And when Wildflower Linen says open house, we not only mean great food, people and fun; but get ready for amazing style and great entertainment too! What better way to show off our linens than in a showroom, on the tables and again on the runway; a fashion show runway showcasing our designer table linen and chair covers for rent!

Katrina and Andrew from Sedona Bride Photography captured the most amazing images from the event and were nice enough to let us grab a sneak peek.

This is our 3rd fashion show this year and they keep getting better and better! Pro-em played a pivotal role in making this event a success with their tent, lighting and rentals, while sierra bonita catering , shelley’s specialty desserts and pour masters wined and dined guests!
Gorgeous models showcased Wildflower Linen’s latest collections as well as signature favorites by wearing the designs across a floral and rose petal runway carpet created by events by showstoppers.
If it weren’t a treat in itself just to have a runway showing of linens, this runway is to die for! I would love to see this at a wedding in Northwest OHIO!

We also had amazing floral designers create tablescapes for the event, Arizona style… of course!! We LOVE how designers can take the same linen and with different elements, florals and visions, a whole new feel and concept is created! Each one worked with a theme and these are their amazing creations:

Petal Pushers created this lovely tablescape using our custom Lauren linen and Marilyn Chair Covers for their “wedding” inspired theme.

When asked to do a “southwest” themed table to really appreciate the styles of Arizona, md design didn’t hold anything back. Using our new Carrington linen, they truly captured the beauty and feel of Arizona.

Along with the amazing petal runway, Events by Showstoppers created this lovely “wedding” inspired table using the Carolyn Linen and chair covers in champagne.

This table linen is perfect for any purple wedding. The variety of shade and texture are perfect for multiple uses!Flora Bella created a playful “Girls luncheon” themed table using the custom Juliet Linen in lavendar and Venus Chair Covers.

Ghost chairs, something blue and a touch of white…so crisp and clean. This would be a fun look for a Persian wedding.
This vibrant tablescape created by Avante-Garde Studio using Iridescent taffeta aquamarineand turquoise jeweled chair covers is the perfect compliment to create this “holiday” inspired theme.

Oh my Elite Brides! This is an fabulous concept to start with for a bridal shower or a bachelorette night. May just a girls night in! Pink and Black are ever a hot color combination…and I see it being even more in 2011 (we have 2 elite events with this exact scheme:). I know a local source in Michigan just recently got a linen very similar to this as well…to die for!

A Classy Country Engagement

Let me just say I LOVE it when a couple comes to me with unique ideas for their wedding. It is always refreshing to sit and listen to their story on how they met, when they fell in love and what they are envisioning for their big day :) Katie and David are a super sweet couple. From the moment I met them I knew we were going to work FABULOUSLY together. Katie and David had a distinct vision for their big day "Classy Country". Well if they asked for classy country, that what they are going to get! I am super pumped about their venue for starts! It does not get any better then a wedding ceremony in the middle of an apple orchard and a reception in a rustic barn! With this being said their engagement photos could not have been any cuter! HAUTE Conference

Hello ALL! As many of you are aware I had the extreme privilege of attending the Association of Bridal Consultants Annual Business of Brides Conference in Phoenix, Arizona from Nov 6th-10th. The annual conference provides valuable continuing education and training information for wedding professional with mini-seminars, trade shows, and networking opportunities. Consultants and vendors come from all over the world to attend the show! It was such a wonderful experience, it was the first annual conference that I have attended and will not be the last that is for sure. It was so wonderful meeting new faces and getting the opportunity to get re-acquainted with some familiar faces. I re-connected with a few people from my trip to Jamaica last year for sandals training, as well as some local planners that I met previously at other training seminars that I attended throughout the year. Lia (a fellow planner from Michigan and owner of Full Circle Eventi) and I had a wonderful time together, it was so nice having someone in the industry to share stores with :) especially over a glass of wine or two :) Well without further adieu the overview of my trip!

Lia and I arrived on Saturday roughly around 7:30pm Arizona time. A friend of mine was so nice to come and pick us up from the airport, and take us to our hotel the beautiful Arizona Grand Resort. We checked in and were starving so we made our way to a Mexican restaurant on the premises. We were both very tired with the time change so we were not up to venturing out to far, and we knew that we had to get up early in the morning. We ate a quick Mexican dinner accompanied by a very overpriced and very small pitcher of margaritas, then headed back up to the room to call it a night :)

We woke early and went straight to the trade show:) We had to check in a and pick up any books that we pre-ordered. Of course I didn't pre-order anything but wanted everything when I got there so I ended up carrying around what felt like 50lbs of books! ugh...oh well at least i had my books for David Tutera and Sasha Souza to sign! The trade show was nice. I was introduced to several new vendors which I have not used before and was very excited at the possibility of using them in the future. I also found some FABULOUS linens! Which I WILL be using this year!!! I was beyond excited, i have been looking for a particular linen and there before my eyes it was being displayed in a vendors booth! Lucky me :) Another fabulous surprise Mary Dann was there. Turns out she was also speaking briefly at the conference. I am a HUGE fan of hers as well, I'm sure most of you have seen her work before and never even realized it. She is a Wedding Planner based of of southern California (imagine that :)) whose work has been featured on such shows as Platinum weddings! She was delightful to meet in person! After we made our rounds at the show we got our hair and make up done, another free service offered to us at the show :) and had some head shots done! Hey why not! Now that we were all dolled up we went up to our room to change,and to head off to The Red Haute Couture opening reception!
Monday came Early, and we had a full day! First there was the Eco chic Breakfast, which was decorated beautifully, then we attended

Although I LOVE David Tutera, meeting and getting the opportunity to hear Sasha speak was the highlight of my trip! I am and have been a HUGE fan of her designs. her events are so inspiring. Her attention to detail is impeccable, and listening to her speak about her design process from inspiration to completion was beyond inspiring and motivating. It solidified some of my design ideas, as well as inspired me to do a few new things! She is such a creative and down to earth person. One of my favorite parts of her discussion: someone asked her what she feels is the biggest issue facing the industry. her reply..."you people do not change what you are worth, and you apologize for what you do charge!" YES Sasha you are spot on! There will be people who value your services and others that do not, and she is absolutely right, this is one thing that will stay in my head for a long time! What we as event DESIGNERS do is HARD work, and is very time consuming, and if you want an event to look like something you saw on Platinum weddings or My Fair Wedding, it is going to take A LOT of TIME and EFFORT and we deserve to be paid according :) enough babbling:) after Sasha's wonderful session it was off to her book signing and photo op! Book signed, check...picture with sasha check....now it was time to eat and hit the hay for another busy day!

Tuesday! Woke early, had to check out because Lia and I were both departing after the conference at the end of the day. Breakfast was a haute chocolate delight with our Masters. We were handed delicious brownie packages from Fairytale brownies as we entered the room that allowed us to select any table with the same name to sit at with a master bridal consultant and pick their brain while we snacked on chocolate croissants, spinach, artichoke and sun dried tomato quiche, chocolate stuffed french toast and a chocolate pot de creme and fresh fruit. It was delightful and defiantly got your engine going with all of that sugar!

After breakfast we headed over to the tented pavilion for 2 more break out sessions!

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Suzanne Dement who runs Sasha's Tennessee Office! It was nice being able to chat with her a bit, and pick her brain a little as well :)

After the sessions we attended The International luncheon, in which I had the pleasure of sitting next to and getting acquainted with Nikki Begg the owner of Bermuda Bride, Petals, and elements! First we were laughing that we had the same name, same astrological sign, same interested and motivation. It was so nice speaking with her. She has been in the industry a bit longer than myself and her advice was monumental, both professionally and personally. Anyone in this industry knows how demanding it is, and the affect it can have on your family if you let it. Its important to keep your priorities in order and remember that a career is great but you cant cuddle up to it at night! (I love you hubby) and any brides interested in destination weddings Bermuda is GORGEOUS! We love to travel!

Then we hurried over and I mean HURRIED to get Great seats for DAVID TUTERA! Listening to David was amazing. He is exactly like you would imagine him to be, the person who he is on TV is the same person you get in person! It was nice to hear his story of how her started, and his advice to other designers and planners, it is something that I will definitely remember forever. Meeting him was also something that I will never forget. He is such a icon. The events that he creates are so OVER THE TOP and breath taking I would be honored to attend one of his events let alone assist in designing one of them. He is also very down to earth which was very refreshing. And Girls he signed one of his books The Big White Book of weddings for one of you lucky ladies to have. I figure I will do some type of promotional contest with it, but haven't decided what as of just yet! David, Sasha, and Mary are all such different designers, yet all provide such wonderful and different incite to the industry. I feel so grateful that my business has grown to what it has in such a short time and that I have such an amazing support system that encourages and supports me, it because of all of you that Elite Events is what is is today and is constantly evolving. It is so exciting. Thank YOU!

Competition: Friendly or Unfriendly?

What is it with the wedding & event industry and all the drama? Our previous blog post about shopping other planners (blog post: being sneaky: The wrong way to do market research)touched on this topic briefly, but it truly deserves it’s own post.

Let’s take a look at this from a statistical point of view. The wedding industry alone hauls in a whopping 2 billion dollars every year! I feel confident saying that there’s more than enough business for everyone. Yet in most markets the competition has taken an ugly turn for the worse. Every time you turn around it’s some petty drama about so and so.

I think one of the most prevalent situations is when a newcomer enters a local market and older business owners feel threatened. Ask yourself this, “If I were the existing business owner and a new business was opened in my market, How would I react?” Often times this new business may not be competing for the same clients but nonetheless most of us know the outcome.

I have a saying that time in the industry has no bearing on talent... but it does determine how you handle yourself.

Competition is a mission, a mission to get ahead of where we are. Healthy competition is a good thing!

You’re a leader, not a follower
Competition inspires you to create new ideas
Competition means differentiation
Competition makes you confident

Unhealthy competition is when your reaction to others’ success is negative, rather than inspiring or motivating to you. Unhealthy competition only reinforces negativity at the expense of seemingly getting ahead. You aren’t actually getting ahead but rather harming your own character. You can easily debase yourself and your business.

You hope others fail because you are afraid of your own failure
You push other’s aside to get your way
You downplay another person in hopes of making yourself look better

Often times people like this will go to desperate measures to cut off their competitor. These people should be warned that their insecurity often drives their opponent to take the high road and thus outwit them. Ultimately people that stoop to this level are so incredibly insecure and scared of their competition. There is no point to this petty drama. Be confident, fair, and friendly. Your business and personal life will be rewarded for avoiding such non-sense. Furthermore, be careful who you pick on….it could definitely ruin your reputation in this industry.

Recently we were poised with this very issue within our company when one of our own was seen to be "threatening" to their peers... treated horribly and without respect. This has no place in our industry and only makes you look petty, short sighted and horrible.

Think about treating people the way you want to be treated.

Enough said.

An Elite Events Engagement!

I am so thrilled to announce that one of our very own is OFFICIALLY ENGAGED! That is Right you read correctly. Kati Kerekes one of our very own Elite Events Coordinators is Officially Engaged. I could not be happier for her and her wonderful fiance Bryan. Kati is a dear friend of mine and such a pleasure to work with! Her and Bryan make an adorable couple and I am beyond excited that they have decided to make it official. Their wedding date is set for August 13, 2011 at the Beautiful Toledo Country Club! Stay tuned as we unveil all of the fabulous vendors who will be assisting us make this wedding truly and Elite Event! Thanks to the FABULOUS MARYWYAR for knocking this engagement shoot right out of the ball park!

Kati & Bryan are best described as laid back, Dave Matthews Band junkies. They love to laugh and go on adventures with their Akita-Chow mix pup Maverick. When I first met Kati, who works for Elite Events Coordination & Design, she said "When you do my engagement pictures, we have to go to a Dave Matthews show..." now she didn't have a ring on her finger & I wasn't quite sure about going to a show for a shoot, but I'm sure I said I was stoked for the idea! When their engagement became official, we talked about the "original" idea of doing their shoot @ a show, but the scheduling was a bust. Instead, we brainstormed & both came up with the idea of breaking out the camping gear and having the shoot center around that. When they travel to shows, they often camp and are frequent visitors to Maumee Bay State Park which is pretty much in their backyard.

The shoot was perfection. Yummy light, fall colors & textures. Kati & Bryan have great style and were a blast to photograph. To say I am pumped for their wedding is a total understatement. Working with someone in the industry is always an honor & super exciting!

Congratulations Kati and Bryan! We love ya!

Treats to Go

Our motto on favors: “If you can eat or drink it, it’s worth it” Otherwise, skip the added cost because most likely guests will leave it behind or throw it away. Now, if you are giving away engraved Tiffany luggage tags, or Waterford Crystal paper weights, then that is another story. But, most brides don’t have the budget for something like that. What guests truly seem to love, is when they are offered special sweet treats, in addition to the cake, such as a candy buffet, truffles, a gourmet cookie bar, or specialty dessert. And, a lot of guests want to take the treat home, to enjoy later on. The wedding to-go boxes featured here can go beyond just M & M’s and truffles (although those are still great), and can be packed full with whatever you can dream of. The best thing to pack is your favorites as a couple. We have seen things like milk and cookies, cupcakes, Chips and Salsa, Bloody Mary’s and Cosmo’s, and even S’mores. We had one client that offered guests famous items from where they grew up, such as Chocolate Buckeyes, Local Beer, and homemade cookies. If you love candy but have too many favorites to choose from, then have a candy buffet with bags next to it so guests can pick and choose and bring home with them at the end of the night. Did you know Elite Events offers a candy buffet rental? Yep. we do! We can provide everything you need! Here is a photo of a candy/dessert table we did for a baby shower.

You can really make this buffet a decor element in your wedding, so have fun with it. These to-go boxes are also a great way to send your guests home with any of your delicious leftover wedding cake. Traditionally, this is what a groom’s cake was for – to send guests home with cake. After all that boogying, no matter what you choose, guests will sure appreciate these midnight snack thank you gifts.

Sneak Peak into our Real Wedding: Brandon & Katie

Vintage Romance is how I would describe this beautiful wedding. Every detail is packed with personality in a lovely vintage package. Katie and Brandon's guests enjoyed a ski lift ride up to the top of Mt. Holly, were they experienced a picturesque ceremony followed by tea, lemonade and a entertaining hay ride to the reception.
Katie's parents Sue and Joe were such a pleasure to work with. This is one creative couple. Each and every detail was Sue's vision and with Joe and Elite Events assistance her vision became a reality. It was wonderful see how all of the details and planning finally came together. Sue is a avid collector of all things vintage. She has spent the last several years collecting, vases, candle holders, vessels, candelabras, rustic doors, old ski's etc. She finally found the perfect way to utilize all of her fabulous finds. The ski lodge at Mt. Holly was the perfect backdrop for Katie and Brandon's wedding celebration, and what a celebration it was! The reception was aglow with roughly 300 candles, and the smell of fresh flowers filled the air. This wedding was exactly what the couple envisioned, unique, beautiful and a whole lot of FUN! Congratulations Katie and Brandon it was a sincere pleasure handling all of your day of details!

Fall Favors Your Guests Will Love!

Favors are fun! They are a great way to thank your guests for sharing your special day with you. Find a favor that says something about you as a couple, is something you love, or is something that compliments your day. Here are some ideas for fabulously fall favors that celebrate the season and that your guests would love!

Mugs & Apple Cider: Giving every guest their own jar glass is a favor they can use throughout the night. Having cider or hot chocolate would add to the fall celebration. Don’t forget the cinnamon sticks!

Photo Booth: Everyone loves to take pictures and be in pictures. Not only is a photo booth a fun activity for guests during the reception, but you can make a scrapbook of all your guests’ fun. A great way to make it unexpected is to provide a fall backdrop and props! We know some great photobooth vendors :)

Maple Syrup: If you love pancakes and french toast then give the gift of delicious syrup. Maple syrup tastes like fall and is a great way to bring you into the cozy months.

Jam “Spread the Love”: Whether it’s your favorite flavor or your grandma’s favorite recipe, giving your guests a jar of jam or jelly is a memorable favor. There is nothing like homemade jam and maybe this would be the perfect task for that aunt or mother in law hoping to help make the day special!

Pumpkin Seeds: What an unexpected seasonal snack! If you have pumpkins as part of your decor then giving your guests pumpkin seeds is a fun way to tie it all together.

Beautiful Blues at the Bartling Brand Wedding

Stacy & Travis left their new home in Vancouver WA to share their nuptials with friends and family here in Toledo. Stacy's mother Laura was such a help throughout the long distance wedding planning process I hope for that kind of unconditional love and support for every bride.

The big day was full of surprises, which included a last minute change in ceremony location due to in climate weather. Thanks to the understanding couple, fast acting Maumee Bay team, and all our vendors for working together to make that location just as beautiful and special for the couple & their guests.

The reception was nothing short of gorgeous. The floral arrangements, up-lighting, lanterns, chair sashes & sweets complimented Maumee Bays banquet room, leaving guests & Maumee Bay staff in awe of the transformation.

Let Me Clarify...Let The Rhetoric Stop There's No Such Thing As A Perfect Wedding

There is a ton of rhetoric in the wedding industry and I want to spend a minute to dispel what I think a lot of planners and designers tend to propagate. Let's stop it...today:

"The Wedding Is The Most Important Day of Your Life"

This couldn't be further from the truth and for those of us who have lived a few years, we know that it is only one of many important days a couple will have. There will be life milestones, babies, new houses, new jobs and lots of other important days that will define who you are and define your life story.

If I hear this one more time come out of the mouths of celebrity wedding planners, event designers or otherwise, my head may explode. It creates an unrealistic expectation about what a wedding is about and the perfection behind it. No wedding or marriage will ever be perfect - it can never be PERFECT. So, please, stop filling the heads of your couples with the notion that you create perfection, when in realism, you are a firefighter. On the wedding day, you put out fires to keep the event as close to a perfect day as it can ever be - you plan for it - create Plan B - roll with the punches but parties have a life of their own and our job on the event day is to mange the expectation. By setting it unrealistically high we are doing a disservice to ourselves and to our clients.

"It's The Bride's Big Day" or "It's the Couple's Big Day"

No, no, no... it's not. The day is about the joining of two families and not about any one person in particular. it's the hopes and dreams of the parents, grandparents and the couple. It's about taking care of the guests and their experience. By telling couples it's all about them, we are only creating the monsters you see on Bridezillas who believe that on that one day everybody needs to do what they say. It's a childlike mentality and adults are getting married. If you're old enough to get married, you're old enough not to be babysat. I'm not a babysitter, I'm a professional person doing a professional job for you and you have to take some of the responsibility as well - it's about the guests who are coming to your wedding and showing them a good time and showcasing your individuality. It's not about being a princess on your wedding day. Grow up.

As Wedding Planners We Relieve Your Stress

I have been doing weddings for a while and this one is the worst. A client is going to feel stressed if they are prone to stress. They also are going to feel stress if their families are setting unrealistic expectations on them and on the wedding...nothing you can do about the families. Just give support & an ear and some advice. But they have to deal with their own stress - either real or imagined. Instead, what we do is show them the road, the right way to create as little stress as possible for them. But we don't relieve their stress...that's what xanax is for.

If we could as a business just stop using these three "catch phrases" we all would have much happier, well adjusted couples.

Can I just say how much I LOVE it when couples think outside the box and truly try to implement unique ideas for their wedding! Brittany & Chris's wedding was no exception. Their Colors Scheme was bold and vibrant just like the 2 of them. Brittany's ideas and concept for her

What an amazing couple! I was fortunate to meet this wonderful couple last June and assist them with their wedding planning! Right from the very first meeting I fell in love with them and all of their inspiring ideas! Beginning with their color scheme! Wasabi Green and Pumpkin Orange! What a vibrant and fun color selection, very suiting for this couple I may add:) As I mentioned I met with Nicole in Dennis back in June of 2009 and from that day forward we began working on all of the details that would bring this fun loving event to life. Elite Events was involved in the concept design as well as day of coordination. It began with a mood board in which told the story of their event. From there we created a custom design motif specifically for Nicole and Dennis inspired by their engagement story, and created sphere inspired elements to reflect this beautiful story. This design was then used in their, Save the Dates, Invitations, (which were the most adorable pocket fold invites) programs, seating chart, table numbers, and all signage. Both Nicole and Dennis are heavily involved in the art scene in Toledo, so it was a no brainier when selecting the venue for their wedding and reception. It was a perfect match! The reception took place in the beautiful glass pavilion and what a beautiful place! The streamline and minimalistic aesthetic of the pavilion and the colorful details of the event worked synergistically together . Details were a very important part of this event, so we made sure not a single one would be overlooked by any of the guests! One of my favorite details of the wedding were the caricature artists that were there to sketch the guests:) then there was the ring bearer pillow constructed exclusively of green button mums......adorable:) Another one of my favorite parts of the evening was the glass blowing demonstration that was begin performed during the cocktail hour, (very suiting for the event :) and then there was the AMAZING cookie buffet and the late night snack (Miles Pizza) which was passed for guest to enjoy! For all of you BGSU grads, you know that it does not get much better than Miles Pizza! It was a great end to a fabulous evening! I hope you all enjoy the sneak peak of this extraordinary event almost as much as I enjoyed designing it!

Often times I am asked by my Brides or my MOB's about tipping vendors. What is the appropriate amount to tip? Who should they tip? SO on and So on. Tipping is optional however highly recommended. I make sure to make my clients aware of this. However, being that this seems to come up very frequently I thought I would find a good article that talked a little more in depth regarding this topic. Wedding Vendors: Tipping Cheat Sheet

With so many wedding expenses, gratuities can add up. Here are the wedding vendors that the knot suggests you need to tip.

When you're already dipping deep into your (or your parents') savings for so many wedding expenses, shelling out gratuities on top of that can be hard to handle. Well, rest easy: unless a service charge is spelled out in your contract, you're never obligated to tip anyone.

However you can't ignore the fact that some vendors will expect a gratuity, which forces tipping to be considered on a case-by-case scenario. Some general rules: Don't tip business owners, only tip their employees (however, you can/should tip an owner when the service exceeds expectations); tip vendors who offer exceptional service; thank-you notes are always appreciated; and assign the responsibility to a trusted deputy such as your wedding planner, a parent, or the best man. For a breakdown of what's customary for each vendor, read on.

Wedding Planner

Wedding planners won't likely expect anything; however, if yours did a great job you can always offer a token of your appreciation. (Note: Non-monetary thank-yous like professional photos of the wedding for the planner's portfolio can go a long way too.) Approximately 50 percent of couples do tip their planners -- typically those with more opulent weddings.
Protocol: Optional
The $tandard: Up to $500, or a nice gift
When to Tip: The bride should hand off the envelope at the end of the reception, or, she should send a thank-you note with photos or a check after the honeymoon.

Wedding Hair Stylist and Makeup Artist

This is one area where a gratuity is definitely expected. Tip between 15 - 20 percent just as you would in a hair salon, and consider giving a little extra if there's a crisis, like one of your bridesmaids has a meltdown over her updo and it requires a redo at the last minute.
Protocol: Expected
The $tandard: 15 - 25 percent, depending upon the quality of service
When to Tip: At the end of your service

Wedding Delivery and Set-up Staff

Slip a few dollars to anyone delivering important items to the site (wedding cake, flowers, or sound system). And if a lot of gear needs to be brought in and set up (tents, chairs, or port-a-potties), the workers deserve a tip too.
Protocol: Expected
The $tandard: $5 - $10 per person
When to Tip: Drop off cash envelopes the day before the wedding to the catering manager so the person accepting deliveries can turn the tip.

Wedding Ceremony Officiant

If your officiant is affiliated with a church or synagogue, you're often expected to make a donation to that institution. If you're a member you'll probably want to give a larger amount than if you're not. However, if you're getting married there and they're charging you to use the space, feel free to give a smaller amount. If you're using a nondenominational officiant, no tip is required because they will charge you for their time.
Protocol: Expected (depending on officiant)
The $tandard: Donate $500+ to the church or synagogue, or, for a nondenominational officiant, an optional tip of $50 - $100
When to Tip: Most ceremony fees are required prior to the wedding. Otherwise, have the best man pass the cash envelope at the rehearsal dinner if the officiant is in attendance.

Wedding Ceremony Musicians

If you worked with a mini orchestra to come up with the perfect score for your service (and they pulled it off flawlessly), consider showing some monetary thanks for their talent. However, you probably don't have to tip the solo church organist who was required to play.
Protocol: Optional
The $tandard: $15 - $20 per musician
When to Tip: At the end of the ceremony.

Wedding Photographer/Videographer

You're not expected to give your shutterbugs any dough beyond their normal fees. Yet if the wedding photographer or videographer doesn't own the studio, consider tipping each person (or give a certain amount with a thank-you note to disperse to staff).
Protocol: Unnecessary, unless the photographer is not the studio owner.
The $tandard: $50 - $200 per vendor
When to Tip: At the end of the reception.

Wedding Reception Staff

This type of staff includes the on-site coordinator, maitre d', and banquet manager. A service charge (typically 2 percent) is almost always built in to the food and drink fee, so check your contract. If the gratuity is not included, tip as follows.
Protocol: Expected
The $tandard: 15 - 20 percent of the food and drink fee (based on labor, not the cost), or $200 - $300 for the maitre d'.
When to Tip: If it's covered in the contract, the final bill is typically due before the reception. Otherwise, have the father of the bride or best man hand the envelope to the maitre d' at the end of the reception since you will need to know the final tab to calculate the percentage.

Wedding Reception Attendants

When it comes to bartenders, waitstaff, parking, bathroom, and coat-room attendants the rules of tipping are dictated by your contract. If the service fee is included, consider doling out extra only if the service was exceptional. If it's not included, ask ahead of time how many attendants will be working your wedding and calculate on a per person basis.
Protocol: Optional, based on contract
The $tandard: $20 - $25 per bartender or waiter; $1 per guest for coat room and parking attendants; $1 per car
When to Tip: Although tips are traditionally passed out at the end of the event, you could alternately distribute them at the beginning of the evening, to encourage all the workers to give you great service.

Wedding Reception Band or DJ

Whether you hire 12-piece swing band or grooving to a DJ, tipping musicians is completely optional. (Depending on the quality of the job and how willing they were to follow your ideal playlist!) And don't forget about any sound technicians they bring with them.
Protocol: Optional, yet preferred
The $tandard: $20 - $25 per musician; $50 - $150 for DJs
When to Tip: At the end of the reception, by the best man.

Wedding Transportation

Again, check your contract, as gratuity is usually included. If it isn't, plan to tip provided they show up on time and don't get lost!
Protocol: Expected
The $tandard: 15 - 20 percent of the total bill
When to Tip: At the end of the night or after the last ride. If you used a separate company for the guest buses, designate a bus captain to hand the driver a tip, otherwise, this duty falls to the best man.

In what some are calling the closest thing to an American royal affair (since the Kennedy days, of course), Chelsea Clinton married her longtime beau Marc Mezvinsky in Rhinebeck, NY, in a star-studded ceremony.

Chelsea Clinton wore an Vera Wang wedding dress (as we knew she would!) to exchange vows in the interfaith ceremony before a reported 400-500 guests, including Wang herself.

The ivory strapless gown featured a silk tulle diagonally draped bodice with a raw edged laser-cut swirling silk organza ball skirt and train, a spokesperson for the bridal brand told StyleList.

Clinton's tiny waist was cinched with an embellished belt also by the designer, while her hair was pulled back and accented by a long traditional Vera Wang tulle veil. Chelsea complemented her gorgeous gown with a simple bouquet of white hydrangeas.

For the reception, she changed into a Vera Wang silk tulle Grecian gown with a crisscross back and a narrow black grosgrain belt.

Chelsea's bridesmaids donned Vera Wang lavender chiffon strapless bias cut gowns with a side drape and contrasting plum bows.

Mezvinsky wore a custom wool mohair mix peak lapel tuxedo by Burberry, who also designed the groom's shirt, tie, and shoes as well as shirts and ties for the groomsmen. the company revealed to us..

The bride's parents, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, issued the following statement to The New York Times:

"Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends.

"We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate the beginning of their life together, and we are so happy to welcome Marc into our family. On behalf of the newlyweds, we want to give special thanks to the people of Rhinebeck for welcoming us and to everyone for their well-wishes on this special day."

The 30-year-old bride and 32-year-old groom -- an investment banker whose parents served in Congress -- had both their ceremony and reception at the glitzy Astor Courts, a Beaux Arts-style estate built from 1902-1904 for John Jacob Astor IV, one of the most famous early American millionaires.

To suit the dressy event, female guests were seen wearing formal floor-length gowns, including the mother of the bride who looked prettier than we've ever seen her in an elegant Oscar de la Renta raspberry degradé embroidered silk gazar gown. Bill Clinton wore a slim black suit and narrow tie.

Let Me Clarify - You Can Always Get It Cheaper...by Sasha Souza

I am a huge fan of Sasha's work, when I came across this blog post of her's I just had to re-post, because it is so very true and so well stated! Enjoy!

There's one thing that I definitely know in life and that is you can always buy something cheaper - telephone service, flights, cars, office supplies, SEO optimization, wedding gowns, pharmaceuticals, wedding flowers, catering....wedding & event planners. You name it and I'll betcha there's somebody out there that can give it to you cheaper... I think that the question that people miss is: But Will It Be What I Want?

Let me give you a scenario that happened to me last year. I sent out a floral & decor proposal for an event that wasn't huge and over the top. It was for a nice party and right in line with the type of events we do. Prior to sending it out, I had gone through and made a few things optional for the client so that they could add in some of the "nice to haves". Exactly what I told them I would do when they hired me.

Then, the phone rings....it's the Mother of the Bride. We'll call her Carol.

Carol: "Sasha...in this economy how can you, in good conscience, send me a floral proposal THIS high?"

Please know that I had been through the proposal backwards & forwards and it met all of the required components that the bride simply HAD to have.

ME: "Thanks for your call, Carol, I sent it because I believe it fits the desires of Melanie (name of bride has been changed) and I did shave a lot off to try to meet your budget"

Carol: "But Sasha, how in the world do you expect us to pay for this? We have decided we don't want to spend more than X" {this would have been nice to know at the beginning, by the way}

ME: "Please let me know what you would like to cut and we are happy to make any changes you like. We can switch from long tables to rounds & squares, change the design of the flowers..."{basically, I gave her 15 options to make changes}

Carol: "But Sasha, Melanie wants all that and we expect that in this economy people are hungry for business and would be willing to make a little less profit for the job"

{quizzical look which garners the side note that in this economy, business owners are more likely going to want a higher profit from each job, not lower to compensate for fewer jobs overall - thereby providing the contracted & paid for services ONLY and not over and above the contracted services}

ME: "Carol, I'm not sure that's the case, but let me just say that I've found out something in life and in business...you can always get something cheaper but it will not be the wedding your daughter wants, it will only be the price you like." {if you use this in your business, feel free to say "well, Sasha Souza says..."}

Why have I told you this story? Because it's true and the statement that I made at the end is an important one when educating couples and ourselves on weddings and what we get for our money. It's easy to say you want a centerpiece to be smaller or "not over the top" or "simple". Let me give you a visual example. We have seen this image from the legendary Preston Bailey in our office many, many times. It's gorgeous with hundreds of flowers in it and I'm sure the image does not do it justice to how grand it is in person:

Can every bride afford it? No. But those that value it will seek it & Preston out to design for them and will be thrilled with the results. Here is how we used his inspiration for a bride who loved the look but couldn't pay the price tag for the flowers:

Could the bride have gotten even this arrangement cheaper? Yes! Absolutely but the structure of the piece, the height, the design would have been vastly different. More like this:

While still pretty, it doesn't emanate the same feeling - BUT it IS CHEAPER! So, if it's cheaper that they are looking for then this would work out perfectly but the expectation can't be for the gorgeous images above.

Another example...Is the peony any cheaper because of the economy? No. So, we offer alternatives and often we substitute with garden roses. Is it the same? No. It's just cheaper and different. Some brides are OK with that and others REALLY want the peony and are not going to compromise for anything less. The decision is only theirs to make.

Carol did go on to pay the bill for the flowers when she understood that what she would get by going elsewhere wasn't what Melanie would have wanted. We were very willing to make changes to the event to get them closer to their described estimated expenditure but they were unwilling to make any changes whatsoever and simply wanted it to be cheaper. period. just. cheaper.

That isn't how this works, people. If you go to the gas station to fill up your car, you make a decision on the name brand station that you go to, how much you want to pay per gallon & the octane level of the gas you want.

OR!

You can go down the street to the gas station without all the special additives. Will your car run the same? Maybe. Maybe not. My car happens to like Chevron Techron 89 Octane or better. I put anything less in it and I'm bummed by the lack of power and performance that I get in my car. I can't go into the clerk and ask them if instead of $2.99 per gallon I can pay $1.49 per gallon and expect the exact same quality & product. If you want me to shave $100 off an arrangement, you're going to lose $100 worth of flowers & design time.

So, when you're visiting with your vendors and you ask them to reduce their price please be sure that you are getting the same exact thing - because if you're trying to compare apples to apples and one person says they can do that Preston arrangement for hundreds less than the other person - chances are you'll be left with arrangement #3 on your 72" round seating 12.

I truly cannot get over how pretty this shower is; from the sweet treats to the green fields, to the Lilly dresses and the flowing bubbly, it is truly pure polo perfection!
Bride Stephanie Covert's shower was held in a private portion of the Nespresso Grande Pavilion at International Polo Club and featured passed hors d’oeuvres, open bar flowing with Veuve Clicquot and a three-course seated lunch fieldside during a Sunday polo match. The bride was surprised with a few drop-in guests, including several of Wellington’s top polo players, and of course, her husband-to-be, Lamont B. P. Harris, also of Palm Beach.

We are very excited for our wedding this weekend! We have been working with Jill for several months now and simply cannot wait to see all of her DETAILS come together. She has a fabulous Venue, and vendors and I promise no detail will be overlooked. Here is a sneek peak from a site vist we did early this summer:)

Isabella turns 1!

What a CELEBRATION!

I am one proud mommy! As most of you know or may not know one year ago July 9th I added yet another job title to my name and that would be MOMMY! That's right my precious Isabella turned 1 this weekend and it was quite the celebration! I do realize that she probably will never remember her first birthday however her father and I definitely will and for us it was a reason to celebrate. For all of you new parents out there, you know exactly what I am talking about.....sleepless nights, cutting teeth, diaper rashes, etc. Our little Isabella is a walking, talking machine and we are so proud of her, and were so excited to celebrate with all of our friends, family and neighbors :) Thank you MAR YWYAR for these AMAZING photos, it is always a pleasure working with you!

The Theme: Cupcakes (My husband loves nicknames and for the longest time my nickname was cupcake, so considering he thinks Isabella is a mini me (nikki) we thought the theme was suiting:) and soo cute for a little girl's party.
